Cultivating the Flexible Mind Through Exploration
When an environment rich in exploration and pattern recognition is foundational, the development of mental flexibility and abstraction is fostered. Research shows that rigid systems using rule-based activities can cause learners to "perseverate"—getting stuck repeating old habits because they are focused only on literal, surface-level details and have not identified underlying concepts, which allow for flexibility and knowledge transfer to new situations.
By replacing restrictive templates with an open playground for discovery, we shift learners away from surface details and invite them to form their own resilient mental schemas.
